Home Treatment

Head Injuries/Concussion
Most bumps on the head cause no damage. A slight headache can be helped with paracetamol. If the patient loses consciousness at all you should take them straight to hospital.

Spots/Rash
Some childhood illnesses can be accompanied by a rash and are minor. Measles is more serious, but is rare now that children are immunised. All of these illnesses are contagious before the spots appear. If your child is unwell contact the surgery for advice.

Nosebleeds
Pinch the nose (below the nasal bone) between thumb and forefinger firmly for 10 minutes. Persistent bleeding may require further medical intervention.

Sprains
RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. A cold compress with ice (a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel/paper towels) applied over the sprain for 30 minutes reduces and prevents swelling. Gradual resumption of movement and exercise over a few days is recommended.

Sunburn
Lotions and advice are available from your local chemist. Avoidance, especially in children, is most important. High factor sun block and hats etc are advisable in all but the very mildest exposure to the harmful rays of the sun.
